It should have different settings on it for forward and backward positions.
I dont want to sound like I am lecturing you, so please don’t take it that way, but Safety 1st carseats have an extremely low rating by Consumer Reports and other independent agencies. I have studied a lot of carseats because I am about to have to buy one myself, and the best rated convertible seats are Britax Marathon (horribly expensive), Evenflo Titan Elite (about $120) and Graco ComfortSport (less than $100).
I hope you will consider these options as well.
